Step 1 Find some open wall space and cut a piece of butcher paper to fit. Before taping to the wall, write uppercase letters all over the butcher paper. You can either write the letters in alphabetical order (a little easier) or randomly like I did (a bit more challenging). Tape the butcher paper on the wall with painters tape.

Amazing literacy activity to help kids learn to read! Letter matching is the perfect way to help with letter recognition and more. Simple to make with cheap dollar store craft supplies.

Step 2 Write one uppercase letter on each post-it note and hide it around the house. I suggest picking 1 or 2 rooms in your house to hide these post-it notes. I can’t tell you how many times my kids weren’t able to find the last couple of post-its and for the life of me I couldn’t remember where I put them! 😅

Step 3 Have your child search the house to find the post-its and place them on the matching letter.

  • Make sure to ask your child the name of each letter as they find it. *Remember repetition is the key to learning*
  • Manipulating the post-its is an awesome fine motor skill so try to let your kiddo do this activity all on their own.
  • For an extra challenge, see if your child can tell you the letter sound as they place the post-it on the butcher paper!
  • Make sure to buy brand name post-its that keep their sticky for a while. That way you can play Alphabet Post-It Match over and over!

How about a fun game to learn the alphabet! Sounds amazing right? Well Alphabet post-it match is a simple and cheap DIY literacy activity that helps with letter recognition! And kids love it.

For kids, learning is all about repetition. The more they see something, the faster it takes root in their growing brains. So, when my littles are learning the ABCs, I try to find as many ways to expose them to letters as I can. This literacy activity not only helps with letter identification, but also helps get their wiggles out running around the house looking for hidden post-its! That’s a win-win in my book.

Alphabet Post-it Match Game Options

You may need to tweak this fun literacy game a bit depending on your child. Here are some options for modifying this learning game.

  • If your child is already proficient in uppercase letters, write lowercase letters on the post-its and have them try to match upper and lower letters together.
  • If working on the entire alphabet seems a bit overwhelming, try picking 4-6 letters to focus on. When I see that my daughter is struggling with a handful of letters, I like to do this. You’ll be amazed at how quickly a child can learn through play!
  • This same activity can be done with shapes, numbers, sight words, names, and more! The options are endless.
