A Fun and easy craft idea for kids of all ages!
Do you have bored kids at home? There isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not looking for creative projects or activities for my kids to do on a rainy day. It’s not easy keeping them away from the TV and iPhones!
These whimsical butterflies are simple to make with basic craft supplies including pipe cleaners and large pony beads. This easy craft created hours of entertainment with my kids, and beautiful keepsakes to cherish once finished. We now have colorful butterflies all over the playroom! This is an excellent spring or summer time craft when you want to have a little bit of bonding time with your kids.
Smaller children will probably need a bit of assistance, but even my 3 year old loved threading the pony beads onto the fuzzy pipe cleaners. We had a blast making them together as a family, and there are so many ways to be creative and personalize them with a variety of colors.
Supplies Needed
- craft pipe cleaners
- plastic pony beads
- clothespins
- scissors
- glue & glitter for decorating (optional)

How To Make Beaded Pipe Cleaner Butterflies
Step 1You’ll need 3 pipe cleaners for each butterfly. Keep two of them full length and cut one in half. Thread pony beads onto the two longer pipe cleaners, leaving about an inch of empty space on each end like shown below.
Step 2Take the two beaded pipe cleaners and cross the ends together to form a circle. Twist and pinch the ends of the pipe cleaners together to secure.

Step 4Pinch the two empty spots of the pipe cleaners together and twist a few times to create the shape of an 8. Your wings are now ready!
Step 5Optionally decorate your clothespins with glitter, paint, markers, rhinestones, or simply leave them plain. They look dazzling either way! If you decide to sparkle them up with glitter, allow at least an hour for the glue to dry before handling them.
Step 6Fold the remaining pipe cleaner in half and place a pony bead on each end. Curl the pipe cleaner around the bead to create a spiral. You’ve now got an adorable little butterfly antenna!
Step 7Pinch open a clothespin and slide the wings in followed by the antenna. Your butterfly is now complete and ready for imaginative play! If you think they will be played with a lot or have toddlers or preschoolers that like to tear things apart (like mine!), you can optionally hot glue the wings and antenna in place.
Aside from simple play on a rainy day, these colorful butterflies make for awesome little trinkets to place on a shelf, desk, cork board, window seal, or anywhere else that could use a little fun pick-me-up.
Try making a variety of butterflies in different colors and patterns. The combination of all of them together makes them even more magical and fun to play with.
My kids wanted to take the butterflies outside and play in the yard– where butterflies love to be anyway! Having kids definitely makes life a whole lot more fun. It gives mom an excuse to make cool projects and enjoy the little things. This colorful spring craft definitely brought smiles to all of our faces. 🙂
